Description of Work

Jon's most recent project is Zion80, a 13-piece Jewish Afrobeat band that performs the music of Shlomo Carlebach set to arrangements influenced by afrobeat master Fela Kuti. Zion80 will release its debut CD on Tzadik in 2013. Jon has collaborated with musicians including John Zorn, Matisyahu, Mark Ribot and Frank London. His other work includes music for film and television as well as graphic and web design.

Jon was born in 1974 and grew up in Philadelphia. He played music from an early age, eventually gravitating to guitar in his teens, and he graduated from Oberlin College in 1996. Initially influenced by the music of Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, his tastes soon expanded to include punk rock, jazz, and world music. He played in several bands in Philadelphia before moving to New York with his wife in 2000. Soon after, he founded the 'Jewish Power Trio' Rashanim with bassist Shanir Blumenkranz and drummer Mathias Kunzli. Rashanim has released four full-length CDs on John Zorn's Tzadik Records, including 'Masada Rock,' a CD of compositions from Zorn's Masada songbook. The band has performed at festivals and venues throughout the US and in Europe. He now lives in White Plains, NY with his wife and three children.
