Work of Description
Aaron’s work utilizes Jewish myths, folklore and history to create lyrically and intellectually dense, visually arresting, highly expressionistic experiences. It combines narrative elements with more abstract notions to create work that can be classified as "theatre" because of its plotting and elements of "play", but "performance" because of its multidisciplinary treatment.
Aaron Henne is Artistic Director of theatre dybbuk, a company whose mission is to illuminate the universal human experience by creating provocative theatrical presentations based on Jewish myths, folklore and history. Its recent production, "Cave...A Dance for Lilith", an investigation of Hebrew Goddess mythology and Kabbalistic notions of creation, was co-produced by LA Contemporary Dance Company, with whom Aaron has collaborated twice previously. Aaron's multidisciplinary and expressionistic pieces include 'King Cat Calico Finally Flies Free!' (published by Original Works Publishing),' A Man's Home,' 'Mesmeric Revelation' (Central Works) and 'Sliding Into Hades' (Odyssey), which received the LA Weekly Awards for Playwriting and Production of the Year.
Aaron has worked with Culture Clash, The Colony Theatre, Center Theatre Group and The Theatre @ Boston Court, where he serves as Co-Literary Manager. His playwriting book, You Already Know, is available through Writ Large Press. In addition to his writing/directing duties, he teaches writing for the Playwrights' Program at The Robey Theatre Company, mentors visual artists on the nature of metaphor and research at Otis College of Art and Design, and has taught storytelling, scene creation, and structure workshops at Disney, LucasFilm, and Pixar. Aaron is a member of The Playwrights Union, and serves on the board for The Association for Jewish Theatre. He has lived in Southern California for 16 years, and currently resides in the Silver Lake section of Los Angeles, where he is fortunate to be able to take daily walks around the local reservoir.
